Upcoming Courses 2024

The following pedology and general soil science courses are now available for registration. The courses are instructed by long-standing members of the Alberta Soil Science Workshop Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy and Dr. Len Kryzanowski.

Applied Soil Physics (EXERM 4281)

March 18 to 27, 2024

The course is offered by Online and Continuing Education (University of Alberta). This online course led by Dr. Len Kryzanowski will introduce students to the basic concepts of applied soil physics, with an emphasis on the quantitative aspects. Basic physical aspects of both the solid and liquid phases of soils as well as how water is held by soils and how it moves through soils, will be covered. The course will examine the link between the soil water regime and processes within the hydrologic cycle, with emphasis on infiltration and the soil physical properties affecting this key hydrologic process. Soil management challenges that involve soil physics and how to manipulate soils to enhance their physical properties will also be examined. Additional course information for this course and instructions for registration can be found at:

  • Soil Classification: short course (SOIL410)

    March 27 and 28, 2024

The course is offered by Paragon Soil and Environmental Consulting Inc. This advanced soil science course led by Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy focuses on common landforms and parent materials associated with soils in Prairies, soil drainage classes and soil moisture regimes, soils of the ten Soil Orders in the Canadian System of Soil Classification, classification of human-modified soils, classification of soils to the Subgroup level, and relation of soil forming processes and factors of soil formation to the genesis of corresponding soils. Prior knowledge of soil science at the introductory level is strongly recommended. Additional course information for this course and instructions for registration can be found at:
  • SOIL 410

  • Soil Mapping: short course (SOIL420)

    April 3 and 4, 2024

The course is offered by Paragon Soil and Environmental Consulting Inc. This advanced soil science course led by Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy focuses on the process of soil survey, prediction of soil types based on imagery interpretation, design of soil map legends, preliminary soil mapping, finalizing soil maps based on field data, and Major elements of soil survey reports. Previous knowledge of soil formation at the intermediate level is advisable. Additional course information for this course and instructions for registration can be found at:

  • Soil Science (IESR200)

    April 15 to 22, 2024
This introductory 3-credit course is offered through Yellowhead Tribal College and taught by Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy of Paragon Soil and Environmental Consulting Inc. The course includes an overview of soil formation and soil classification with an emphasis on soils of Western Canada. This course is provided in a hybrid format with in-person classes in Edmonton and online synchronous classes available via the ZOOM platform. Additional course information for this course and instructions for registration can be found at:

  • Soil Classification and Mapping (EXCPE 4297)

    May 7 to 13, 2024

This 3-credit course is offered by Online and Continuing Education (University of Alberta). Advanced agrology course with emphasis on classification and mapping of soils. This course includes online lectures and a mandatory in-person field trip. The course focuses on soil processes, principles of the Canadian System of Soil Classification, soil profiles and diagnostic features, factors of soil formation and soil-forming processes, soil survey procedures, and utilization of existing spatial information to support soil mapping at a detailed scale. Students need to be fit for duty during the mandatory field trip. Prior knowledge of soil science is strongly recommended for this course. • Pedology Field School (SOIL230)

    May 21 to 22, 2024

The course is offered by Paragon Soil and Environmental Consulting Inc. This 24-h introductory soil science course is fully field-based. The 3-day field school led by Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy focuses on hands-on experience with application to industry standards. The field school introduces students to description of soil pits and landscapes, field diagnostics of soil properties and processes, soil classification to Subgroup level of the Canadian System of Soil Classification, soil sampling protocols, hazards associated with ground disturbance and the Alberta One Call procedure.
